Triangle Speakers Address Middle and High School Students

On February 25 Mount Madonna School (MMS) middle and high school students were visited by representatives from Triangle Speakers, an affiliate of the Santa Cruz Diversity Center’s educational speakers bureau. The four panelists were Ashlyn, Edie, Robynn and Barbara, local members of the LGBTQ+ + (lesbian, gay, bi, trans, intersex, queer and ally) communities. Panels like these have been visiting local schools and organizations (including MMS) for many years.

“At this very moment LGBTQ+ volunteers may be leaving their jobs or homes for one of hundreds of events where they will have an honest, heartfelt talk with a group of total strangers,” notes a statement on the program’s website. “Their experience of overcoming adversity: the joys and the struggles, the fear and the love, the highs and the lows, is what makes these panels impactful. This is the Diversity Center’s Triangle Speakers Program.”

MMS students entered into conversations with the guests, asking them questions about terminology and personal history. The speakers were very friendly, informative and professional in answering questions and sharing their stories. This day of educational conversations was part of an intentional, ongoing effort to make the MMS campus a safe space, both physically and emotionally, for everyone in the community.
