Senior Awarded National Merit Scholarship Commendation

Mount Madonna School (MMS) is pleased to announce that senior Alexis ‘Lexi’ Julien has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. Earning this distinction signifies that a student scored in the top 5% nationwide of the more than 1.5 million students who took the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

‘Lexi is a diligent student and compassionate person who serves the MMS community as a student representative on the Board, starting player and libero on the varsity volleyball team, member of the student Book Club and contributor to the student newspaper,’ observed Jivanti Rutansky, MMS Head of the Upper School, and Shannon Kelly, high school teacher and college adviser. ‘Her wonderful leadership serves as an inspiration for her classmates and our younger students.’

Julien lives in Santa Cruz and began attending MMS in ninth grade. She is one of about 34,000 high school seniors across the country commended for their exceptional academic promise.

‘As one of Lexi’s teachers I am thrilled that she is being recognized for her academic achievement. She is more than worthy of this accolade and is one of the top students I’ve had in my teaching experience,’ commented high school Values in World Thought teacher Ward Mailliard. ‘However, even more impressive is the quality of her thinking, her willingness to take personal risks in the pursuit of understanding, and her passion for the art of writing as a process of self-discovery.’
