Creative self-expression, academic excellence and positive character development are hallmarks of a Mount Madonna School (MMS) education, and are infused throughout the preschool through grade 12 curriculum. The performing arts Character Project, designed for students grades six through 12, consists of three components which serve to offer students the chance to explore their role(s) in school musical productions and express their creativity.
“For their Character Project, students develop a backstory, a unique perspective on the world, and a narrative from their
character’s point of view,” explains Chelsea Otterness, performing arts director. “Each student creates an artistic representation of their character, which can range from 3D models to props for the show, or a poem; the possibilities are vast. Finally, students combine their written narrative and artistic rendering, explaining the significance of the object they’ve created for their character. This assignment opens up a new creative space for students, allowing them to step into the shoes of another character for a brief period, enhancing their imaginative and performance abilities.”
Following are images of some of the students’ work related to the current middle school production of “Elf The Musical, Jr.” Some of their character artworks will be displayed at the Hawks’ Nest Theater for the duration of the show.
