Between Childhood Imagination and Adolescent Maturity: ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Onstage

A humorous and poignant tale of growing up, Mount Madonna School’s upcoming production of Alice in Wonderland, Jr. is a good fit for middle school-age performers; and a show that somehow combines the iconic styles of Monty Python, Saturday Night Live and Walt Disney.

Matinee performances are planned for December 15 and 16 at 2:00pm, at Mount Madonna’s Hawks’ Nest Theater. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students under 18. To reserve your seats, call (408) 847-2717.

The show features bold, brassy, swiftly-moving action, along with plenty of catchy and accessible songs, outrageous over-the-top characters, colorful costumes and sets, and a good measure of contemporary humor and nostalgic references. On a more thematic level, the play gently touches on issues of growing up.

“As Alice seeks to discover her identity, she straddles the mysterious divide between childhood imagination and adolescent maturity,” comments MMS Performing Arts Director Sampad Martin Kachuck. “In her journey, she is confronted not only by her own continually changing body and inward confusions, but also by the crazed and equally confused world around her. In the end, she affirms her own identity, repeating with great elation and discovery, that she is simply herself: ‘I am Alice ’.

“Whether our performers within this process truly understand the thematic parallel to their own lives really does not matter,” adds Kachuck. “That is the beauty of theater and of this play in particular. No matter what the inroads to creating their characters, the process promises creative investment and expansion of theatrical abilities, the opportunity to find confidence to share talents and entertain, the discipline of the art forms themselves, and most importantly, the experience of community, working closely together with a large group united by circumstance and common goal.”

Mount Madonna School’s production of Alice in Wonderland, Jr. is presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
