“Ramayana!” The Musical

46th Annual Musical “Ramayana!” Returns to the Stage at

Mexican Heritage Plaza Theater, 1700 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose, CA, USA

June 5-8, 2025

Join Hanuman, the monkeys, Prince Rama and Prince Lakshmana, as they journey to Lanka in their quest to rescue Princess Sita in the 45th Mount Madonna School (MMS) “Ramayana!”, a musical theater production adapted for modern audiences and replete with lively action, dazzling costumes, humor and universal life lessons.

The “Ramayana!” is an annual event in which the entire Mount Madonna School (MMS) student body takes part. This magical theatrical production of drama, dance and song has been entertaining audiences for more than 40 years. In the preschool years, students begin by taking part in the ever-popular forest animal scene. As they grow at MMS they work their way through various roles as dancers, singers, monkeys, demons, and martial artists until they finally emerge in lead roles during their high school years. Behind the scenes, a large supporting cast of parents, teachers, alumni and Mount Madonna Center staff take on the roles of prop makers, costumers, makeup artists, technicians, musicians, stage crew, and concessionaires. This makes the “Ramayana!our largest school event of the year and the largest theatrical rendition in North America.

“I love that most of them aren't of Indian origin, and yet celebrate the story and mythology of another culture with such joy. That's how you build tolerant human beings.”

“I am delighted to attend, once again. My wife and I have been greatly impressed by the effort and attention to detail put in by students from across the school. What makes this so remarkable is the general transition, whereby parents who acted in the play in their school days now come to see their children and grandchildren bring alive a story which forms part of a living heritage and tradition, and which has provided comfort and solace to millions of people for thousands of years.”

~Former Ambassador Venkatesan Ashok, Consul General of India, San Francisco
‘The thing that blows my mind is that somewhere in California, this has been done for the last 45 years. As a school production it is just remarkable. The kids’ performances along with the setup and costumes are just amazing,’ said Nalin, a San Jose native who came to the show with friends and family.”

~ As said to Reena Rathore, India West
“Mt Madonna School performed their 43rd year of Ramayana and a vast majority of them are non-Indian origin and yet they have such deep love for the core message of the epic and values personified by each character, have a deep understanding of Ramayana and doing the same epic every year and perfecting it without getting bored of it and asking for another skit. More importantly understanding Ramayan as universal values.”
