Mount Madonna Sophomore Completes Half Marathon
Congratulations to Mount Madonna School (MMS) sophomore Sophia Saavedra for completing her first long distance running event – the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon – held February 17 in Pasadena!
Sophia, a longtime runner, completed the 13.1 mile course in 1:56, placing third for girls in her age division. Way to go Sophia!

Third Grader Competes in Regional Climbing Competition
Mount Madonna School third grader Ben Pearson competed in the Northern California regional Sport Climbing Series (SCS) climbing competition in Fremont on May 11. He was competing against boys between the ages of 8 and 11 in the Youth-D category.
He finished 7th in the qualifying climbs in the morning and moved on to the afternoon finals. He finished 8th in the finals. Over the whole season he ranked 6th in the region and 30th in the nation in the USA Climbing scoring.

Students’ Poetry Selected for Santa Cruz Anthology
The 20th Annual Santa Cruz County High School Poetry Competition Reading will take place on Monday, May 20 at 6:30pm at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.
More than 300 high school students from all over the County entered the competition, and nine Mount Madonna School (MMS) students have had works selected for the final anthology of 50 published poems, with three MMS students receiving honorable mentions.
Offshore and Underwater Learning: Marine Science at Catalina Island
The ninth grade class recently returned from a Learning Journey they call “Flow with Water” or Yeyeco Ica Atl in the language of the Pimungan people, the first human occupants of California’s Santa Catalina Island. The class went to Catalina Island off the coast of Long Beach and joined the Catalina Environmental Leadership Program (CELP) for a week of outdoor field studies, leadership challenges, and personal growth.
