Valor, Honor and Gender Equity: Mulan Jr. Onstage

Despite uncertainties and at great personal risk, Mulan, a young Chinese girl, disguises herself as a boy to take her father’s place in fighting the invading Huns. Packed with bold adventure, humorous characters and memorable songs, Mount Madonna’s middle school production of Mulan Jr. , is a poignant and comedic tale of family honor, wartime valor and gender equity.

A vibrant performing arts tradition and integrated arts curriculum make Mount Madonna School (MMS) performances outstanding. Put aside any stereotypes of what “middle school play” might bring to mind — think quality, great costumes, staging, musical talents and dramatic accomplishment. These kids work hard and it shows! Performances are Saturday and Sunday, December 12 and 13 at 2:00pm. All seats reserved, tickets are available at 408-847-2717. Prices: $15 for adults, $10 for 18 and under.

‘As a directing team, we search out plays that hopefully appeal to our middle school performers, contain positive values and inspirations, and that can be easily shared with a family audience,’ commented Sampad Kachuck, MMS middle and high school performing arts director. ‘We certainly also check for an active chorus that is dynamically involved in the story line so that each performer truly sees his or her importance as part of a greater whole. Mulan seems to fit the bill on all counts. Performing arts at MMS is not just about putting on plays, it’s about developing a deeper sense of community, of collaborating and learning how to work creatively together. We are excited to witness our students bring the show to life.’
