Savannah Cambell

Class of ’21 Senior Spotlight: Savannah Cambell

Name, city of residence:

Savannah Cambell, Soquel

Grade you started at MMS:

Kindergarten

What inspires you?

My family, they are my rock. My family helps me through everything and makes me a better person. My friends also inspire me: to have fun, live my life and enjoy who I am. I can be myself when I’m around them and just thinking about them brings a smile to my face!

What is your favorite subject in school, and why?

Science with Humanities, as it’s very, interesting. Teacher Nicole Silva really challenges us and sees other perspectives. She gives so much information and makes you want to learn more. I love her teaching style, and this makes me love science even more.

If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be?

I would want zero carbon emissions, so there’s no carbon footprint and no global climate change. I want the Earth to be healthy and for humans to not destroy it.

If you could go anywhere, where would you go?

The Galapagos; there’s so much history and so many unique animals that it would be extraordinary to see what Charles Darwin always talked about.

Name one big challenge in your life right now:

I’m leaving for college so soon that there isn’t enough time to spend with my family and my friends before I leave. I wish I had some more time to spend with the people I care about.

What is your dream job and why?

Every day I think about being a physical therapist. I want to help athletes become stronger and help them to heal. I want to be the person who can help them. I want to be able to go to other countries and learn their ways of medicine and start my own practice one day. I would love to start a facility where it’s not just physical therapy, but also includes a training area, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and a chiropractor. It could be a place where we would use more Eastern medicine and more natural practices, and where athletes could come and have everything they need in one place.

What are your three favorite things?

This would be nature, my loved ones, and kale salad.

Favorite TV show:

Friends, it brings me joy, laughter and happiness. It’s a symbol of my family being together because we watch it all the time together. I know everything about it and just love it! I have watched it maybe 100 times!

What do you want to do after high school?

I want to go to college and play volleyball there, I want to get a degree in exercise science, and eventually become a physical therapist and start a family.

Something that you are proud of – and why:

Winning state! It was a really big goal of mine, and it finally came true last year! I now have my name on my team’s banner, and after working my entire life and playing volleyball for so long, now that I can look up and see all those names makes me so happy!

Something that makes you smile:

Everything makes me smile! The fact that I’m living here on Earth, my friends, my family, the sun, the ocean; life is just wonderful and everything makes me smile!

A favorite MMS memory – and why?

My junior year rafting trip. It was the best thing that ever happened. I was good in the raft wars, and our girls raft boat was so fearless, we were always trying to flip our raft! We were so bonded and it felt like a true family. I will never forget the connection I had with that group on that rafting trip.

Top three most played songs on your favorite playlist:

“When it Rains It Pours” by Luke Combs; “Girls in the Hood” by Megan Thee Stallion; and “Church Bells” by Carrie Underwood.

What have you been doing since COVID started to keep busy:

In some ways, COVID has been a blessing in disguise; it’s been one of the best things that could have happened for me. I have found many silver linings, and have become much closer to my family because we have dinner together every night. I have been able to go with the flow more and not overanalyze things as much.

Alumnus Noah Tervalon (’20) interviewed Savannah for this spotlight feature.

“I am a computer science major in the Tufts School of Engineering, with a minor in dance,” shares Noah. “Being able to expand my horizons has been one of the best things for me, and moving across the country has allowed me to gain so much perspective. I am a teacher’s assistant for a class on campus, as well as working on founding a club, which will officially begin in fall 2021. Mostly my life has been working to find out where I fit in at college and what that looks like during COVID, while trying to make the best of the situation. “
