Project incorporates lesson on electricity and decorations for Winter Concert
Do you remember turning 13: the anticipation, angst, joy, of wanting to ‘fit in’ and ‘stand out’? On December 16-18, Mount Madonna’s High School presents its production of 13 , a grown-up story about growing up.
From aluminum to indium, hydrogen, plutonium and copernicum, eighth grade students at Mount Madonna School represented each of the 118 chemical elements this week – in a ‘Periodic Table of Cupcakes!’

“I left part of my heart in South Africa,” commented Mount Madonna School (MMS) senior Quincy Mitchell. “And in return it has given me a piece of its soul that I shall carry with me forever.”
Mitchell’s comment came during the September 23 Sawubona Project presentation at MMS. ‘Sawubona’, Zulu for ‘I See You’, is the name of a year-long project which culminated in a June journey to South Africa for MMS’ senior class. The project was developed as part of the “Values in World Thought” social studies course, a two-year curriculum for MMS 11th and 12th graders.
Pencils, paper, classrooms and new schedules…When you think of the first day back to school, what comes to mind? For some 60 high school students, their first day was anything but typical: arriving ninth through twelfth graders at Mount Madonna School (MMS) toted sleeping bags and swimsuits. The occasion? Four days of whitewater rafting, camping and teamwork along the American River.
Even as students enjoyed their last few summer days, preparations were underway for a return to school classrooms. But what if school didn’t start inside, but outdoors, underneath the redwood canopy – surrounded by tents, friends, and the wafting smell of campfires?
