Congratulations to Mount Madonna sophomore Carlo LeGan, whose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills earned him first place gold in a 10-0 shut-out final match at the recent Rising Sun National Tournament in Daly City. This August 25 event marked Carlo’s fourth consecutive shut-out tournament (no points scored against him).

Vibrant, luminous colors, lush florals and dreamy landscapes are hallmarks of artist Sandy Shaw's paintings. Shaw, Mount Madonna's new middle school art teacher, is participating in the upcoming Santa Cruz County Open Studios, and invites all MMS families to stop by.

She will exhibit work from her "Botanical Journey" series on two weekends, October 6-7 and 20-21, 10am to 5pm. Her studio is located at 1015 Pleasant Valley Road in Aptos.

The costs to attend a U.C. School are now in excess of $30,000 per year, while many private colleges now cost nearly twice that amount!  If you are a parent of a younger child and hope to be able to help fund their college education, you should be setting money aside ASAP.

This class will help you determine how much you should save and will explain the pros and cons of the various savings plans - including the potential impact of each one on future financial aid.  Procrastination is one of your biggest risks - the earlier you begin saving, the better.

If you are a parent with a high school student looking to enter college, this class will help you learn what you need to know to help your child search for a good college, understand what admission people are looking for, write that dreaded essay and create an excellent resume. Paying for college is the one of the largest expenditures most parents will face in their lifetimes. In this class we will discuss strategies that can help you reduce college costs.

Longtime MMS contributor and friend, Shmuel Thaler, will be showing exhibits of his photographs in downtown Santa Cruz in September and October.

MMS students and their families are invited to join Save Our Shores and other organizations for the Annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 15, 9am-Noon.

Join PD Rohan at Seacliff State Beach, or volunteer at another site.

Prospective families are invited to come tour the Mount Madonna School campus. We will meet in the Library to discuss the overarching principles and curriculum offered at MMS, and then break into groups to visit the classrooms while class is in session.
